The words "neutral-zone trap" and "no-nonsense coach" will not be carved into Jacques Lemaire's tombstone. But like long evening shadows, those labels have followed him to St. Paul and his job as the first coach of the Wild.

In 1995, Lemaire coached the New Jersey Devils to the Stanley Cup by using a bump-and-grind, defense-first game that has become the NHL standard. During coaching tenures in Montreal (1983-1985) and New Jersey (1993-98), he sometimes feuded with veteran players over his tactics or his coaching style.
