WASHINGTON _ In an otherwise close U.S. Senate race in New York, first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton holds a substantial lead over Republican Rep. Rick Lazio among Hispanic voters, according to a new poll by Knight Ridder.
Clinton enjoys a lead of nearly 63 percent to 21 percent, the survey of 600 registered Hispanic voters in New York showed. The other 16 percent either had no preference or supported some other candidate.
The most recent poll of all New York voters showed Clinton and Lazio dead even, with 42 percent apiece. Clinton's hope of victory depends on a strong showing among minority voters, because they are crucial to her Democratic Party base. ...
