Jun. 30--What's good for a small new telecommunications firm is good for an established giant that wants to get bigger.

At least that's how it looked when Memphis Networx went before the Federal Communications Commission recently to object to the proposed $124 billion merger of America Online with Time Warner Communications. Time Warner has vocally opposed Memphis Networx's proposed countywide high-speed telecommunications network at the Tennessee Regulatory Authority.

Created in November, Memphis Networx is a joint venture of Aptus Networks, an A&L Underground subsidiary, and the Memphis Light, Gas & Water Division.
