From the cliff-top perch at Mount Defiance in New York, visitors can see Lake Champlain stretching north and south in a ribbon of blue set between the rolling green hills of Vermont and New York. It's hard to imagine a more peaceful scene, but in the 1700s the lake was the scene of one battle after another during both the French and Indian Wars and the American Revolution.
