ASSISTANT Chief Constable Paul Blewitt announced on the Ed Doolan show that the police are to withdraw their services from certain events - fun runs, street carnivals and similar.

He wants 'bobbies' on the beat to fight crime. On such occasions he says they are acting simply as stewards. Are they?

What about the officer's oath of protection of life and property, preventing and detection of crime, maintenance of order? When there is a mass of bodies and people at such events there will always be the criminal element waiting to pick ...
