Article: Pope call for reduced prison sentences.

WASHINGTON, July 1 (UPI)

Pope John Paul II has appealed to world leaders to mark Jubilee Year by reducing "even by a modest amount" the sentences of prisoners in their respective countries, Italian newspapers reported Saturday.

In an 11-page document made public by the Vatican Friday the pope also called for "a change of mentality" towards prison conditions, and urged "the removal from the laws of states norms that are contrary to man's dignity and fundamental rights" -- a veiled reference to capital punishment, according to the press reports.
