SEWARD, Neb., July 4 (UPI)
The Fourth of July rivets two things in Bob Dowding's mind -- that he survived being a prisoner of war in Japan during World War II when many of his fellow soldiers died, and how his sacrifices and those of millions of other veterans have enabled Americans to enjoy freedom, prosperity and the opportunity for happiness.
Talking about his wartime experiences still brings tears to his eyes 55 years after he was freed from a camp in Toyama, Japan.
"I get emotional about it," he said in an interview at his home. In the past five years he has been receiving counseling to deal with the wartime experiences.
