NEW ORLEANS -- If an average teenager took a test on sexually transmitted diseases, she would likely score an F.

That's what happened when a 13-question exam on STDs was given to 66 adolescents and young adults from the Birmingham, Ala., area. A majority got six questions wrong, showing that "teens have a poor knowledge about STDs," Jeanne S. Merchant said at the annual meeting of the Southern Society for Pediatric Research.

The pop quiz was completed by people aged 13-24 years at events like health fairs, focus groups, and summer camps. About 75% of the test takers were female, and most were African American, said Ms. Merchant, a research coordinator in ...
