THE cross-Channel contrast could not be starker. On this side of the Channel, Ford announces the end of car production at Dagenham and Rover changes hands for [pound]10. In France, meanwhile, Renault enjoys a renaissance which has proved that even apparent basket cases can be steered back from the brink of disaster.
The strong pound and weak euro may have played a passing role, but the fates of the British and French motor industries in the past decade are a striking example of the difference which a clear strategy, business acumen and strong nerves make in reversing seemingly terminal decline in a mature industry.
