FIJI's president yesterday dismissed the government of prime minister Mahendra Chaudhry, who has been held hostage in the parliament building for the past 10 days.

President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mari said the move meant there was no need for the gunmen to keep the prime minister and 30 MPs hostage. They have been kept captive since failed businessman George Speight orchestrated a coup.

The Pacific island nation's fragile corporate sector is bracing for the economic fallout. The hostage drama sparked international calls for economic sanctions, the loss of privileged market access for Fiji's exports and its expulsion from the Commonwealth.
