Fishing gear entangled on the bodies of four stranded sea turtles has been determined to be from large-mesh gill nets, a fisheries biologist said Tuesday.
Since last Wednesday, 220 dead sea turtles, almost all immature loggerheads, were blown by easterly winds onto beaches between Hatteras and Oregon inlets. Until the gear was examined Tuesday, officials did not have a definitive link to any cause for the astonishing number of marine turtle deaths - about the same number that usually strand on state beaches in an average year.
