Gabriela Jimenez first learned of Saturday's Party in the Park when her two children came running into the house screaming something about relay races, a bunch of kids and cool prizes.
Minutes later, Jimenez and her children were among the hundreds of area residents celebrating in St. Francis Park on Elgin's northeast side.
"They were so excited, I said 'OK, you can do it, but I'm coming with you,'" Jimenez said.
For members of Destiny Church in Hoffman Estates and Elgin's Iglesia Metodista Unida El Mesia, it was a mission accomplished.
