No one prescription for Fox dams

For many, the long-standing dams across the Fox River are a source of good fishing and boating or the man-made obstructions that create the mesmerizing lull of falling water. To die-hard environmentalists and paddlers, they are unnecessary obstacles to migrating fish and canoes.

For rescue personnel up and down the river, the dams have a fearful reputation, with good reason. Two Elgin firefighters and a power skier have died in the powerful curl at Elgin's dam, for example, and two others died at or near dams in Batavia and North Aurora.
