Lear Corp. is preparing to jointly produce full-sized luxury vans with General Motors Corp. in the fourth quarter for sale next year.
GM plans to build 10,000 to 15,000 Chevrolet Express LT and GMC Savana SLTs annually in Wentzville, Mo., and send them to a nearby Lear factory - most likely in Wentzville - to have interiors and some exterior trim installed. They'll be shipped back to GM and then to dealers.
The move is a first for both companies. GM has not produced a full-sized luxury van and Southfield-based Lear (NYSE: LEA) has never installed entire interiors in production vehicles.
