More than 40 percent of Korean mothers were reported to have delivered their babies through caesarean section last year, the highest rate in the world.
The National Health Insurance Corp. (NHIC) said in a report yesterday that childbirths through caesarean section accounted for 69,421, or 43 percent, of a total 161,360 births in the second half of 1999.
The statistics were complied by the NHIC, which analyzed childbirth documents of 1,487 hospitals and clinics across the country.
The caesarean section rate marked a twofold increase from 21.3 percent in 1995. It only stood at six percent in 1985, and grew to 13.2 percent in 1990 and 21.3 ...
