Was Virginia's 1999 saltwater fishing season a good one? You can take your pick of either ``yes'' or ``no,'' based on statistics from the Virginia Saltwater Fishing Tournament, which closed out its 42nd year Dec. 31.
First, the good news: The contest registered 4,821 catches meeting its requirements for ``citations,'' the popular name for plaques earned for big fish, either boated or released.
That's the fifth-highest total in the state-sponsored event's history.
The bad news: The 4,821 citations reflected a 22 percent drop from the record 6,133 catches registered the previous year. This despite increasing the number of eligible species by ...
