Nursing homes throughout Hampton Roads are facing serious new financial pressures at the same time their increasingly frail residents need more expensive care.
Other types of housing for the elderly - such as assisted living facilities - have siphoned off clients who needed the least amount of care, leaving nursing homes to deal with the tougher cases.
In addition, managed care has prompted hospitals to release patients ``quicker and sicker,'' which means more people are using nursing homes as a stopgap measure.
