WHAT'S YOUR GRIPE?
Hey, Road: I got a speeding ticket and I'd like to check my speedometer. I'm looking for a measured mile. The nearest one I've been able to find is on the west side of Waverly on U.S. 460. I live in Chesapeake and would like to find something closer.

Dear William: A measured mile, for those of us who didn't know, is a stretch of highway that depicts one mile precisely, with every one-tenth of a mile marked along the way. You can use these measured miles to determine whether your instrument panels are accurate. VDOT uses measured miles to calibrate its equipment.
