The state's longest and most durable bridge will be eight months late and cost about $1 million more than originally expected.
Two extensions were granted on the Croatan Sound Bridge for delays resulting from design change requirements and permit inconsistencies, said Randy Midgett, state Department of Transportation resident engineer.
The Army Corps of Engineers, which oversees the wetlands permits, also shut work down for six days to penalize the DOT.
``Right now, our completion date is looking like March of 2002,'' Midgett said last week from his office near the eastern approach to the bridge.
