Hunters aren't the only ones benefiting from a booming deer population here. Food bank pantries and the needy people they serve have been big winners as well.
Deer meat donated by Hunters for the Hungry - 14,000 pounds this season - has become a key food source for the poor.
``It's very important to us,'' Jean Davis, director of the Food Bank in Tasley, said about the venison. ``It's very nutritional, very little fat. We had 8,000 pounds, and it's all gone but for a few packs.''
Pantries on the Shore have little other meat to distribute - some chicken from Perdue occasionally, or canned ham from the federal government.
