It was held in Cambridge in winter. It wasn't glamorous or exciting. And, according to author Dava Sobel, nobody was interested in the seemingly obscure 1993 Harvard Symposium celebrating the 300th anniversary of John Harrison's birth.

That's the reaction Sobel got when she tried to interest several magazines in an article about the obscure 18th century Yorkshire carpenter who discovered the method for determining longitude at sea.

Harvard Magazine eventually said yes. And Sobel's account of Harrison's life and accomplishments proved so stirring she turned it into an international bestseller.
