Virginia Opera put on a lavish luncheon Friday to thank its corporate sponsors, and brought in a big-time arts warrior: the chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts.
William Ivey's appearance at Harrison Opera House is believed to be the first time an NEA head has spoken in Hampton Roads.
He didn't come to talk opera, though he did discuss the sizable impact it has on young people.
He came to promote a positive view of the federal agency he has run since May 1998, when he inherited the art world's most challenging job from actress Jane Alexander.
