The European Commission's latest pledge was made on 5 July in Berlin at the second Chernobyl pledging conference, co-chaired by Germany and Ukraine. The aim of the conference was to secure the funds needed for refurbishment work on the concrete sarcophagus sheltering the damaged reactor unit 4 of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The Shelter Fund is managed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). Germany pledged USUSD 25.6 million, and UK promised USUSD18.36 million.
