Health officials fear the city's immunization rate - the lowest of any large city in the country - could mean an epidemic is not far behind.
Only 67 percent of Houston children 19 to 35 months of age received childhood vaccinations for diseases in 1999, according to figures released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. The national average is 80 percent.
''It is something that the government and the community need to address immediately,'' said Walt Orenstein, a physician who directs the CDC's national immunization program.
