The Kukule Ganga Hydropower project is one of the biggest schemes undertaken by the Sri Lankan government at a value of $200 million. Some 85% of estimated total cost will be funded by the Overseas Economic Corporation of Japan (OECD) by way of a soft loan with 2% interest and a grace period of 10 years. The balance of the construction cost will be borne by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB). The project started with the construction of infrastructural facilities about two-and-half years ago, and most of this work is now complete. Some 25 km of access toads, 140 culverts, five bridges and 52 buildings with quarters for the project officers have been built.
