Mercury levels disputed

A coalition of environmental groups has urged the Food and Drug Administration to resume testing mercury levels in tuna, swordfish and shark after a report determined that FDA data shows potentially unsafe levels of mercury in those highly consumed species. The FDA stopped testing the fish in 1998. The most recent comprehensive study, the federal government's 1991 food-fish survey, showed the species had mercury levels of less than one part per million.
