Walter Blanchard was a prominent Downers Grove resident and judge when he decided, at age 54, to fight for the Union in the Civil War.
He raised his own company of men and marched into battle, where he lost his life and became something of a local legend.
But you wouldn't know it from DuPage County's memorial to its fallen soldiers.
Blanchard's is among more than 100 names which, according to an amateur historian, are missing from the Civil War portion of the memorial at the county complex in Wheaton.
Built at a cost of nearly $750,000, the monument was dedicated just last year. It includes names of 900 DuPage soldiers killed or missing ...
