Aviation analysts have indicated that they expect American Airlines to announce a deal to acquire Northwest Airlines sometime this summer.

It is also expected that American Airlines will offer a premium of 50% over the current share price, which could push the offer up to between USD55 to USD60 per share.

American Airlines offered Northwest Airlines USD44 per share several weeks ago, however the other carrier was seeking about USD100/share based on the high premium offered by United Airlines to US Airways according to Reuters.
