The 1999 movie ``The Uprising'' highlighted a lesser known aspect of Cheju island instead of its reputation as a leisurely tourist paradise.
Set against a historic event in 1901, the movie depicts a bloody war between corrupt local administers who collaborated with powerful French missionaries, and discontent peasants in the region.
Through the portrayal of the battle that took some 700 lives, the film shows how Cheju residents struggled to salvage the land from the grip of outsiders.
