Federal investigators yesterday got their first look at a Southern California factory that makes two parts that are believed to have played a key role in the crash of Alaska Airlines Flight 261.

Trig Aerospace in Santa Ana, Calif., is the sole supplier of a jackscrew mechanism that moves the horizontal stabilizer wing on the tail of planes such as the one that crashed off the California coast on Jan. 31.

The pilots of Flight 261 were having problems with the MD-83's stabilizer for at least 30 minutes before it jammed, 12 minutes before the crash.

Although Trig only bought the business last July and did not make the parts on the Alaska jet, ...
