The Seattle Mariners' midseason move to Safeco Field gave the team its first profit in the current owners'
7 1/2-year history, the club reported yesterday.
In an interview with the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Mariners President Chuck Armstrong said the team had a modest net profit of $2.59 million for 1999.
The club would have lost $6 million had it not moved into the new ballpark, where attendance soared, along with revenue from advertising, food, parking and ticket sales, he said.
Armstrong emphasized, though, that the gain merely reduced from $77 million to $75 million the owners' aggregate operating losses since 1992.
