Recently, the Washington State Department of Agriculture announced plans to spray a square mile of Seattle with a beneficial bacillus (Btk) that, it is hoped, will kill any and all resident gypsy moths.
Last year traps in the target area, which includes parts of Ballard and Magnolia, caught one Asian gypsy moth and 42 European gypsy moths. The latter are not the problem; European gypsy moths have been found in Washington for more than a century.
It was the single Asian male that triggered the WSDA's massive response. Why such a fuss over a single moth and one batch of eggs? After all, European gypsy moths haven't wreaked havoc during their long stay.
