Two months after he lost a key primary in this state, his candidacy a fading memory to most here, Sen. John McCain apologized yesterday for betraying what he called the single most important principle of his bid for the Republican presidential nomination.
In a remarkably self-critical speech, McCain said he had not spoken his true feelings during the campaign when asked his personal view of the Confederate battle flag flying over the Statehouse here. He did not tell reporters at the time that he believes Confederate soldiers ``fought on the wrong side of American history'' and that the flag should be taken down.
