While opera companies across the country - as well as orchestras - are preening with pride these days, many ballet companies are under sustained attack for problems on stage or at the box office.
Pacific Northwest Ballet, with its declining ticket sales, diminished fund-raising ability and constantly shifting administrators, is one example.
In ethnically diverse, culturally rich San Francisco, however, ballet has never been more prosperous or more admired. At long last the ballet is as important as San Francisco Opera and the San Francisco Symphony.
