In December, W.R. Grace & Co. promised to ``do everything in our power to help the people of Libby.'' Now, the company has notified the Environmental Protection Agency that it will not sign an agreement with the EPA to clean up two asbestos-contaminated sites here.
The agency says it will go ahead and clean up the sites, and bill Grace for the work.
Grace made the promise after the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported that hundreds of people had died or contracted fatal diseases from the asbestos-tainted ore at a vermiculite mine owned by Grace.
