Life on Earth took a serious hit when Mount St. Helens blew.
The eruption devastated living creatures within 250 square miles - tens of thousands of mammals, tens of millions of fish and countless plants - as blast-furnace-hot ash clouds scoured the area at 600 mph, followed by a massive avalanche 600 feet deep in places.
