Article: Belarus sets date for elections.

MINSK, Belarus, July 13 (UPI)

Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko set Oct. 15 for the country's parliamentary elections for Oct. 15, his press service said Thursday.

Opposition groups have said they plan to boycott the poll, which would be the first chance for the citizens of Belarus to vote in four years.

In 1996, Lukashenko called a national referendum that extended his term in office, and then dissolved parliament, replacing it with a chamber of representatives packed with his supporters.
