Braces may still suggest an image of a mouthful of silver - maybe not quite like the steel-jawed, metal-chomping giant in the James Bond flicks - but close.
Actually, it's not close at all.
Today's braces are far less cumbersome than they were a generation ago, which means more comfort for the wearer and fewer trips to the orthodontist for adjustments.
As a measure of how things have changed, kids today want braces, orthodontists say.
''I totally wanted them (braces),'' said Sally Thompson, 14, of Weaverville, Calif. ''I like the way they look.''
