Americans deprived of pizza for weeks often develop a strong craving for the beloved pepperoni pie. It has become a food institution as much as hamburgers and hot dogs ever were.
Pizza has even influenced townscapes. A few decades ago, American drivers speeding through the countryside would give ''town'' status to one-blink settlements at crossroads if there was a post office in view.
Now a driver in the ''boonies'' notices two village institutions front and center: a video rental and the omnipresent pizza carryout. These two are everywhere together, even among a handful of houses. It's the American scene.
