There may be no more charged an issue than that of homosexual marriage and whether such relationships should be recognized under the law.
Controversy over the issue is brewing in several states. California is probably the biggest battleground. There Proposition 22, a measure that would ban gay marriage, will be decided next Tuesday at the polls.
We probably all remember a few years ago when the courts in Hawaii and Alaska sought to open marriage to same-sex couples through judicial activism but the people voted against it by a 2-to-1 margin.
