An ''ecological monster'' lurks below the murky depths of the Ohio River, nearly eradicating countless native species and silently changing the nature of the river itself.

Reproducing by millions at a time, the animal literally blankets the rocky bottom from shore to shore and clings to nearly anything man-made that remains below the surface. With sinewy adhesive fibers, the exotic invader wraps around its victims and kills them slowly and silently in the water's depths.
