When Alyssa Beckerman arrived at the Cincinnati Gymnastics Academy two years ago, Mary Lee Tracy, the coach and owner, could see all that she needed to see in the young New Jersey woman - the long, fluid lines, the rippling grace, the natural artistry - but she couldn't hear what she needed to hear.
''I need to hear you say that you want to make the Olympics,'' Tracy said.
Beckerman took a deep breath, dwelled for a moment on her dreams, and then said the words that she knew, once spoken, would define her life for the foreseeable years ahead. ''I want to go to the Olympics,'' she said.
