A new arts center that was supposed to breathe life back into Newport's Monmouth Street area is in danger of closing less than a year after it opened.
The Artery is a non-profit group offering art programs, gallery and studio space at 913 Monmouth St. But it's heavily in debt and will be forced to shut down unless it figures out a way to pay its bills, said Michael Hammonds, the center's art director.
''We don't want it to close at all,'' said Hammonds, who also serves on the group's board of directors. ''But it's a hard, uphill battle.''
To make matters worse, a touted program affiliated with the center may be gone by summer.
