Jul. 17--There's a new star in the left-field home run territory at Jacobs Field.
Bright, sophisticated, round and colorful, it outshines its more famous teammate in center field.
"It's the latest and greatest," said Steve Warren, the Cleveland Indians director of broadcast operations, of the new LED (light-emitting diode) video board sponsored by Pepsi. It represents a new medium that soon may be showing up in more than just sporting venues.
Billboards, highway traffic signs, stock tickers and casino tote boards already have adapted the new technology because it is lighter, smaller and easier to read than older-style video signs.
