Now West Germany has found its post-Hitler feet, where will they carry it?
CONSIDER a new sort of German question for the 1990s. The old one, meaning western collywobbles about what sort of price West Germany might be tempted to pay for the chance to reunify with East Germany, has not entirely disappeared. Perhaps it never will. But even those West Germans who say they still want it recognise that reunification is not something for the here and now. It was not nostalgia for Germanies past but hard-nosed business deals that Russia's foreign minister, Mr Edward Shevardnadze, was peddling in Bonn this week (see page 40).
