TWO sharp disputes have periodically marred Sweden's relations with the Soviet Union. The visit to Sweden by the Soviet prime minister, Mr Nikolai Ryzhkov, that started on January 11th has removed one of them. The two countries have finally resolved a 19-year-old argument over economic zones, sorting out who gets to fish where in the Baltic. The other problem remains submerged, with the Russians still claiming that it does not exist.
Mr Ryzhkov was not interested in discussing the frequent violation of Sweden's territorial waters by what the Swedes claim are Soviet submarines. Unless Sweden could provide proof that the submarines were Russian, there was nothing ...
