Caltrain officials are designing a "passing lane" for the Peninsula rail line that will halve the agonizing commute time from San Francisco to San Jose.

The extra rail line will be reserved for a fleet of trains, nicknamed "baby bullets," that will take 45 minutes to travel from the San Francisco station to San Jose's Diridon station. The same commute currently takes 95 minutes.

"We believe there's a market for more ridership if we can offer shorter travel time," said Howard Goode, chief development officer for the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board, which runs Caltrain.
