CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Measurement of the hemoglobin content in reticulocytes is a more sensitive and specific way to screen for iron deficiency in children than are the traditional hemarologic or biochemical panels, Dr. James A. Stockman III said at a pediatric meeting sponsored by the Medical University of South Carolina.
The reticulocyte is the first cell to show evidence of iron deficiency; mean corpuscular volume and other changes in red blood cell parameters don't change until the condition has progressed longer.
