Jul. 18--NEWPORT NEWS, Va.--The economic batteries of this old shipbuilding city could soon get recharged.
The state of Virginia and the city of Newport News are gambling about $1.85 million of incentives that Evercel Inc. will find a significant market for the nickel-zinc rechargeable battery technology the company is trying to commercialize.
The incentives are nearly 10 times the battery company's revenue in its last fiscal year.
Evercel and Gov. Jim Gilmore announced Monday that the company will locate its North American manufacturing operations in Newport News' Oakland Industrial Park, just north of Fort Eustis.
