The Naval Aviation Systems Command (NAVAIR) last week ordered the grounding of 101 Marine Corps AV-8B Harriers following a June 21 crash caused by an engine fire, according to a Marine statement and a NAVAIR program official.
Eleven of the 101 Boeing [BA] Harrier aircraft impacted by the grounding are forward deployed. The grounding has been in effect since July 11.
Flight operations have been suspended for all Marine Harriers using the F402-RR-408 engine by Britain's Rolls-Royce. Preliminary findings from the June 21 crash investigation have shown that a bearing assembly in the engine was the "likely cause" of the engine fire during a training ...
